On Thursday 1 April 2021, Yann Boulestreau will present his PhD thesis, carried out under the direction of Mireille Navarrete (INRAE-Écodéveloppement) and supervised by Marion Casagrande (ITAB, INRAE). The thesis, which was defended on 11 February 2021, is titled “A co-design approach to innovation from the cropping system to the agri-food system, for the agroecological management of soil pests in market gardening in Provence”.

The management of soil pests (e.g. pathogenic fungi, root-knot nematodes) in sheltered market gardening in Provence still mainly relies on soil disinfection techniques, which are harmful to human health and/or the environment. Yet agroecological techniques to manage these pests do exist.

The thesis analyses the reasons for this lack of shift in practices towards the agroecological management of soil-borne pests. Together with the stakeholders, it also explores the coupled innovations to implement in order to remove the barriers to changes in practices. To this end, Yann employed several approaches: sociotechnical analysis, innovation tracking, development and use of serious games, and design workshops.
